NETFLIX series review: 3%

by Ismael Beeyes

"3%" is a Netflix Originals series that is probably best described as pro-Communist propaganda on steroids. This is as obvious as something can be to fuel class wars in real life for nefarious purposes.

By no means does this mean it's not an entertaining series to watch; in fact I'd say if you're looking for a recommendation, I would say go ahead and watch this series.

It does have its flaws though, so don't take it too seriously and keep in mind that the intention of the show's creators was pretty obviously to let the Communist-terrorists win in the end, no matter how they had to shoehorn that victory in. Still fun to watch the "battle".

The premise of the show is that the world is divided into two sides, the haves and have-nots, in this series called "The Offshore" and "The inland". Apparently no other countries or cities or people exist anywhere else in the world anymore for some reason.

The Offshore is an island paradise, created about a century ago by a founding couple (later determined to have been a founding trio). Everybody there is sterilized and the way they get new people in is by importing only worthy 20 year old people from the Inland after putting them through some puzzle-solving-like tests to show they have merit.

Those who pass the tests get taken by submarine to the Offshore where they live luxurious island-resort type lives, while those who don't pass have to live their lives in the Inland, a shanty town place that is located literally inside a crater to drive the point home that they're of the lower classes, living in delapidated buildings some of which seem to have been glorious and beautiful before but haven't been maintained.

Now you may think: Ok nice, everybody gets a chance to prove themselves worthy of living a luxurious life in the Offshore if they so desire; sounds great!

But no, the show is going to expect of you to hate these "3%" people of the Offshore automatically - how dare they have better lives and better homes and better clothes and better quality of life, while the rest of the people have to live in poverty???

And no, the show does not demand of you that you think "fine, so why don't these people from the impoverished side just start their own better lives projects, so they can elevate the quality of their own lives? That's the solution".

NO!!! The show expects you to HATE those who have, and wish them and their better circumstances DESTROYED COMPLETELY, so that EVERYBODY CAN LIVE IN THE SAME SQUALOR, HOPELESSNESS AND DESPAIR. That's the aim of Communism, and it's an unforgivable sin of you to want mankind or any part thereof to have better lives. EVERYBODY MUST BE ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE WITH ABSOLUTELY NO HOPE WHATSOEVER. That's called "equality"; equal misery at all cost.

So yeah, that's the basis of the show. Of course there is "The Cause", which is an organization of what you can call terrorists, who infiltrate The Offshore by sending their own spies and terrorists to "The Process" (the yearly event where all the 20 year olds are tested for suitability), with the aim of completely destroying The Offshore from the inside.

If you're a logical person who don't let your emotions be manipulated easily, you'll soon ask "So what's wrong with The Offshore? Sure it's not perfect, especially the part about everybody having to be sterilized before living here, but what's so wrong about it if some people prefer to live a higher quality of life and make it happen for themselves?"

Yep, that's what happened to me too. But the simple answer is, the show's writers and creators made it out of the viewpoint that you'll just automatically assume that it's wrong for some to have something while others don't, even if those who have, have created it themselves or worked hard for it or have talents of skills or something that they used to get what they have, and those who don't have, don't have because they waste what they have or have bad habits that destroy what little they had instead of building it up.

So instead of explaining what's so wrong about it, they just have some of their characters call it "an injustice" while pulling a disgusted face, without expanding on their reasoning or offering a logical explanation, obviously because if you call it what it is, it's just jealousy; pure and ugly jealousy, and that would put the viewer off of rooting for these characters.

So, for the entirety of the series, you shall be expected to ignore that it's just out of jealousy and spitefulness that basically all the main characters want to destroy The Offshore, and instead you are expected to root for them because "Communism, yay!".

At the start of the third season, one of the female characters originally from the Inland, have started her own upliftment project called "The Shell".

The idea seems great and I thought "yay, finally they're on the right track! Instead of focusing on destroying out of jealousy and spitefulness that which others have built up for themselves, the poor building something for themselves is the right way to build better lives."

You will need to completely suspend belief though. Somehow overnight they erected a huge, giant building with electricity, water and food production.

Where did they get the bricks and mortar and other materials to build it with? They have many steel shelves and whatnot there; where did they get the materials for it if there are no other people and cities on earth where materials are mined, produced, distributed and sold etc.?

Of course they are shown idyllically though, some people voluntarily working inamong some green plants they are tending to, and sleeping on hammocks etc.

And above the door there is a sign: EVERYBODY WELCOME. No idea why they weren't swamped with thousands of people on day one if everybody can get in without proving anything, and there's free food being produced for everybody. But the series does kinda try to explain it by showing some saying that The Shell is a fake version of The Offshore or something such, and they don't believe in it so they don't go there.

Anyway, eventually The Shell is burned down by one of their own people, who has made a deal with the head of security at The Offshore to destroy The Shell in exchange for getting herself residency on The Offshore.

Even though it's really one of The Shell's own people who light the fire that destroys The Shell, the series ignores that further and expects you to cheer for the main characters who go on a mission to destroy The Offshore in retaliation.

Long story short, finally in the 4th season the terrorists manage to set off an electric pulse on The Offshore that destroys all electronics and causes a leak at the nuclear power plant, dooming the island virtually forever with the resulting radiation. Some residents die while others are now homeless and have to flee back to the impoverished Inland with only the clothes on their backs.

It is here where I lost any and all of my support for the main characters. Up until here I grew to love them almost as real people, but now that they've managed to destroy people's lives just out of jealousy and hatred for those who have it better than themselves, I could no longer see them in the same light. They are just evil, petty terrorists without insight into life, ruled by jealousy and immature hatred. No matter how hard the show tried to endear them to me, the viewer, I just never felt for them again.

At the end of the 4th and probably forever the last season, the terrorists get everybody together to start a new world "where everybody has a voice". So hundreds or thousands of people come to gather together, and the series ends with the main characters looking around all smug, pretty proud that they have doomed everybody to live in the same swamp of poverty, crime, hopelessness, despair and filth.

But as long as nobody has any hope of ever going somewhere better, right? Because that would be "injustice".

At this point I wanted to throw up or kill all those moronic main characters who instead of creating a better world, created "equality" by destroying those who have it better than them, so everybody can live in equal misery.

But do they actually manage at this gathering to now create a just, idyllic Communist Socialist world where "everybody has a voice"? Of course the series shows nothing like that, and ends quickly instead so they don't have to show any of the possibly horrendous consequences of a world where everybody is now equally downtrodden.

Anyway, all in all, 3% is a rather interesting watch. I did enjoy most of it.

But as I said, just don't start asking logical questions, like if there are no shops, where does everybody get their clothing, or if there's nobody else and no businesses around on earth other than these two divisions of people, howcome there's still materials and appliances and electronics and a whole array of products and things and consumer stuff and whatnot? Who's making it? From what? Where does everything come from? If the Inland is inside a crater in the desert without the ocean in sight, howcome everybody goes from The Process building on the edge of the crater BY SUBMARINE INSIDE THE OCEAN to the OffShore island paradise? Where is the ocean in all the wide shots of the crater? Etc. etc.

If you start asking logical questions, the answers will not be forthcoming and you'll probably stop watching this mindfuck. Just turn on your reptile brain and hate those who have better lives than you and hope for their destruction. That's the aim of this series.
