This method of disposal of the dead may go back as far as prehistoric times, as some ancient graves have been found in many places which contain no bones, but instead there are urns holding funeral ashes.
Previous to the time of Christ, cremation was a general practise among civilized nations, although of course other ways of dealing with the dead which are worth mentioning is the embalming of the body of the dead by the Egyptians, the Jews who laid the dead in tombs, and the Chinese who buried the dead in the ground.
Burying the dead in the ground came to be almost a universal custom most probably because of several causes, the chief among which was the belief in the resurrection of the body.
On the other hand for sanitary reasons, cremation began to be urged as early as the seventeenth century, but not until the latter part of the nineteenth century did the matter receive much attention either in Europe or America. Many eminent physicians published their views on the necessity of cremation as a safeguard to public health, especially in densely populated districts.
Thus the idea gained ground. In 1881 a public crematorium was opened in New York City. In 1885 the first crematorium in England was erected at Woking, Surrey.
In earlier crematories, body and coffin were burned separately. In the modern plant the remains are consumed within the casket without handling.
The crematorium has a chapel connected with it, wherein funeral services may be held. The casket is then placed in the incinerating room. The metal handles and name plate are removed. It is then introduced into the terort.
The heat is so great that after a few hours nothing but the ashes of the bones remain. All else, including the casket, has disappered in light ash or gaseous products.
In 1926 there were eighty-seven crematories in the United States at which some 17,000 bodies were cremated. Although health authorities may consider cremation desirable, there is of course strong objection to it, perhaps largely due to sentiment, religion or cultural customs.
However, perhaps factors such as space for cemeteries running out while cities are expanding and populations are growing, may contribute to cremation gaining ground and becoming a widespread universal custom.
